The Elderly and Dangerous Medication Mishaps
When it comes to medication and the elderly, it is not uncommon for dangerous mishaps to occur.

There are several contributing factors to the dangers that the elderly face when it comes to medication.

One of those is the sheer amount of medication that many elderly people have to take on a regular basis. Often an elderly person can be on several prescription medications at the same time as well as some over-the-counter medications. Another problem is that when an elderly person is given a prescription they don’t always follow up with their doctor to have their medical condition reevaluated. Instead, they may listen to the advice of friends and family. That can be a big mistake.

No matter what type of medical condition an elderly person has or what medications they are taking, there are certain things that should be done so that their condition and medication are monitored correctly.

• If you have a parent that is taking any medications, you should make a list of all these medications.

• Your list should be given to the pharmacist that fills your prescriptions, as well as your doctor. Always keep a list at home in an easily accessible location for emergency purposes.

• It is a good idea to always get your prescriptions filled at the same pharmacy. The reason for this is that they will keep a list of all medications a person is taking in their computer; this way they can inform you if any medication you are taking may cause problems when taken with other types of medicines or foods.

• Make sure you are using a daily pill organizer. This can help you keep track of when to take your medication, and if you have missed taking it.

• A family member or friend should volunteer to keep track of what medicine is being taken, and ensure that the person is taking all of the medications prescribed by their doctor.

When it comes to medication, it is important to monitor your loved one. It is not all that uncommon for someone to overdose on their medication because they have forgotten they already took it for the day. They may also completely forget to take it at all.
